Put the Dock to Work! by Del Conkright

Do you know what the Dock is? Have you been using it? Have you been putting your Dockto work or have you just been selecting your applications from it? If you don’t know theanswers to these questions, here is a quiz and solutions to put your Dock to work.

1. Do you know what a dock is? It is the row of icons at the bottom of the screen, when you first got the computer and saw the desktop for the first time. You click on the iconand the program starts up.

2. Do you add programs to your dock? Click, drag and drop images of any program to the left of the line on the right side of thedock. (That line is a vertical series of lines.) It is only the image, not the program. Now you don’t have to go looking for it every time you want to use it.

3. Did you know you can place the dock to the left or right also? Did you know you canhide the Dock and change the size?Click on System Preferences. Click on Dock in the top row. Select the Size, Magnification,Position on the screen, Minimize using Genie Effect or Scale Effect, and finally decide ifyou want to Animate opening applications and/or Automatically hide and show the Dockby clicking in one or both boxes. With it personalized to your liking, you can make it work for you.

4. Do you make it work for you?To make it work for you--take your hard drive icon (Mine is Del’s Computer) and drag the image over to the right side of the dock to the right of the line and when the icons on the dock open up let it go and it will be on your dock. Do that with any folder that you use a lot and have to keep digging into other folders to get it. Now when I need a file, program or picture on my hard drive I just click on my hard drive icon on the dock and click on the folder or subfolders that it is in until I find it. Even if the hard drive icon on the desktop is hidden by a window. Same for a folder you have put on the dock containingall your Word documents or folder of work/school programs and files. This easy access to my most important files is one more reason I love my MAC! Enjoy!
