Applications You Might Like No. 1
Mac For Beginners
by Del Conkright
I keep running into wonderful programs that I think people would love to get, if they knew they were out there. So I have decided to start writing about them here. Why do I think you would like them? Because they are free or cheap. That’s what I like, cheap or free!
Here are my first three programs, with more to come:
Found in MacLife, Nov. 08, pg. 18:
Ziplight, Bartas Tech., http://www.bartastechnologies.com/products/ziplight/
Price: Free
Ziplight is a Spotlight plug-in that lets you search for files inside zipped folders. Ziplight finds your stuff in a flash, but only looks for the names of files-it doesn’t search inside the files themselves. You do name your files carefully, don’t you?
Quickapps, Giant Robot Software, www.giantrobotsoftware.com/
quickapps.php
Price: Free
The Dock is great for keeping your favorite applications at the ready, but it’s no place for things like Boot Camp Assistant or other rarely used apps. Now you don’t have to hunt through Finder folders to launch infrequently used apps when the need strikes: Quickapps puts applications and utilities not already in your Dock at startup into a customizable list accessible from the
menubar.
Media Catalog, Robert Kuilman, http://halfduplex.net/
Price: $24.99
If you’ve ever tried to remember which backup DVDs hold your episodes of Lost and which hold our Lost fan fiction, Media Catalog is worth a look. It keeps a searchable database of the files on your external drives and removable media right on your Mac, so you know exactly which external drive or disc to look for to find backed-up files. --Adam Berenstain
Until next time....
